An Introduction to High Altitude Lavender
In collaboration with Paul and Johanna Quam, Leynse Lavender Garden, and Valley Grown Nursery, High Altitude Lavender has over 2000 Lavandin plants (Lavandula x intermedia ‘Grosso’) in the ground at two locations. Another 700 ‘Grosso’ plants propagated and grown by Evan Adolf of Valley Grown Nursery (Grand Junction, CO) will be planted in the spring of 2014 at the Valley Grown site in Mack Colorado. Current plans include the planting of 1500 ‘Maillette’ (L. angustifolia) at the Leynse Garden site in spring 2014.

What does High Altitude Lavender have to offer?
High Altitude Lavender essential oil and hydrosol is produced by steam distillation in stainless steel. Distillation is accomplished at atmospheric pressure. This technique produces the highest quality products possible.  The extraction time is 30 minutes and reflux is minimized by careful attention to steam generation and temperature of condensate.

Note:  Aromatherapists requiring longer times of extraction can request special distillation times if the request is made prior to the July distillation season. Distillation of additional cultivars can be arranged.

Distillation in 2013 was accomplished in July using fresh floral stems, and in October using dried bouquets. Essential oil and hydrosol from both distillations are available.
